Prerequisites: This is an LL.M. level course. Students who are not in the LL.M. program are admitted only upon Pericles’ determination that the student’s English level and knowledge of law are sufficient to complete the course work, and upon the permission of the Professor.
Objectives of the Course: This course is designed to give the student or practicing lawyer a basic understanding of the major businesses that make up the entertainment industry. We will “try to focus on what the primary role of an entertainment lawyer is in the publication of a book, or the release of a recording, the production of a television program, motion picture, or game and the transactional issues they raise.”
How does one publish a book, make a movie, record a song, and particularly, what is the lawyer’s role in these settings? Who are the players in the game, the agents, the personal managers and the others and what do they do? What type of agreements and business relationships are involved?
This class will hopefully answer all of these questions and give you an overview of the intellectual property, corporate, anti-trust, tax, labor, tort and contract law involved in the amalgam called «Entertainment Law.»
Evaluation: Attendance and class participation during the course count for 10% of students’ grades. The final examination counts for 90% made up of essay and multiple choice questions.
Class Format: To maximize class discussion and learning, students are expected to read the assigned pages before class, and to attend and participate in all classes. In class, students will be expected to discuss the assigned readings and apply them to the problems in the printed and in class hypothetical situations.
